The Right Way to Use Social Networking
By: Aaron Howard
Social sites have become extremely popular over the last couple years. With the success of sites like Facebook and MySpace, many more social networking sites have popped up, and they continue to increase in popularity. Because of the vast number of people that use these sites on a regular, and sometimes daily, basis, it's important that you consider how social networking can enhance your existing internet marketing strategy.
If you are unfamiliar with social media sites, besides the major ones previously mentioned, some other examples include YouTube, Twitter, and Squidoo. The purpose of sites like these ones are to provide a means for people to connect with one another on a personal level. If you intend to leverage social networking to market your business, you need to tread lightly. On many of these sites, commercial activity is frowned upon.
Put simply, just create a profile, either for yourself or your business, and try to meet, befriend, or connect with as many people as possible. If there is a certain demographic or group of people that are your target customer, than choose networking sites where those people are most likely to hang out. Then, work to establish yourself as a knowledgeable resource on a given topic, by answering questions, participating in forums, creating content-rich pages, etc. This will help to build trust in you, and solidify your online reputation as an expert in the field.
It can be much easier to use these networking sites if you have a blog, or other content-rich area of your website, to which you can direct people for more information on their question. This often works well on forums, or other interactive websites. Answer their question with a brief answer, and then direct them to a blog post or web page that provides a more detailed answer or explanation.
To go a step further, consider monitoring the Internet for mentions of your product, brand or company name. You can use a reputation monitoring service, set up Google Alerts, or have your internet marketing consultants monitor it for you. By receiving notification whenever you're mentioned online, you have the opportunity to both participate in the discussion and, if the comments are headed in a negative direction, rescue the situation.
Social networking can be a valuable tool in your internet marketing portfolio, but unless you approach it with a plan and a goal, you can easily tarnish your online reputation, and it will be much more difficult to restore it, than if you start out right in the first place.
